Is there any improvement that can be made to avoid oiling the filament, for instance, replacing the OEM bowden tubes by capricorn tubes?

Hello finas,

Replacing the original bowden tube with capricorn tube will only reduce the retraction and oozing a bit.

To reduce the necessity to use oil you either need to increase the cooling of the extruder a lot with a 40x40x20 fan (not recommended as it causes lots of noise but it is a quick overkill method), or replacing the heat throat with a PTFE lined one (beware as the PTFE insert reduces the list of materials you can print with) or a Titanium metal version, installed with some thermal paste between it and the heatsink, this will reduce the amount of heat transferred from the heater block to the heat throat and by consequence to the heatsink.

That said the oil is only really necessary for PLA prints as the material is extremely sensitive to temperature changes, slightly softening and increasing the resistance against the heat throat. For PETG, Nylon, ABS, PC, etc... as long as you applied some oil on the first two or three prints it should not be necessary.

Extra Info:
Using a 0.6mm nozzle has a similar result as the extrusion pressure is reduced and the flow of material is increased as such the filament wont be so likely to touch the heat throat for a long time.

The WD40 is not only a lubricant, it is a Water Displacement formula (hence the name WD) it will also keep the filament without moisture inside the bowden tube increasing it's lifespan and decreasing the likeliness of a brittle filament breaking inside the tube.

do you know where I can buy a titanium heat throat?
Can you link me to it?
And most importantly, and this is also for the capricorn tube:

- will any of these upgrades mess with the very fine tuned calibration that you made for the printer? will this end up reducing print quality because of mismatched firmware calibration expecting some kind of hardware and encountering other ( capricorn and titanium throat )

Hello Finas,

Right now as the heat throat is custom I don't think you can find it online, you would need to order and manufacture or order your own from a metal CNC. We can provide the specification if necessary. But I would recommend trying to use the printer without changing any parts at the begining as that way you can be sure everything is correctly assembled and working, if you change parts you always risk changing the expected outcome and making debugging much harder. Once everything is okay you can start moding your machine :D

As for the change in bowden tube, it will slightly change the retraction values (you will need to lower it otherwise you can run into jams due to excessive retraction although unlikely), also the bowden compensation factor will need to be tuned for the new tube. You can change it on the printer start gcode on Cura, the line is:
"M900 K160 ; K-Factor PLA"
for a bowden of the original size a value from 160-250 should be good, increasing the value compensates the bowden tube further but can grind the filament hence we use the value 160 to give a good balance of compensation without ruining filament compatibility.
Try starting at 240 and lowering the value 20 at a time noting if the print quality on a calibration cube has decreased. choose the value with the best corner (sharpest corners, not rounded) and the best top surface quality.
